Tesla disputes $243M verdict linking Autopilot to deadly crash
Tesla is looking to challenge the recent decision that held its Autopilot self-driving feature partly responsible for a fatal accident in 2019. The company's legal team has filed a new document in a Florida federal court arguing that the crash was solely caused by the reckless actions of the driver, who ignored safety features in his Tesla vehicle. The lawyers stated that the judgment against Tesla contradicts Florida tort law and common sense. The incident, which resulted in the death of Naibel Benavides Leon and severe injuries to her boyfriend, occurred when the driver, George Brian McGee, activated the Autopilot feature and lost control of the vehicle. Despite this legal battle, public opinion remains divided on holding Tesla accountable for crashes involving its self-driving technology. Recent research suggests that most consumers believe Tesla should compensate crash victims in incidents involving Autopilot and Full Self-Driving technologies. Notably, the appeal comes as interest in Tesla's self-driving capabilities has waned, with only a small percentage of respondents saying it significantly influences their decision to purchase a Tesla vehicle.
