Suspect sexually harassed teen before deliberately hitting her with SUV, Queens DA claims

A tragic incident occurred in Queens early Saturday morning, where a teenage girl lost her life after being struck by an alleged drunk driver. The driver, Edwin Cruz Gomez, faces serious charges including murder and driving under the influence. The events unfolded on Roosevelt Avenue in Elmhurst, where Cruz Gomez sexually harassed the victim, Jhoanny Alvarez, her mother, and offered them money for sexual acts. Following a confrontation that turned physical, the driver intentionally drove onto the sidewalk, hitting Jhoanny, her mother, and stepfather. Jhoanny tragically passed away, her mother sustained leg injuries, and her stepfather was also injured. Surveillance footage captured the driver attempting to flee the scene but was later apprehended. It was revealed that Cruz Gomez's blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit. He could potentially face 25 years to life in prison if convicted and is due back in court on Friday.
