Struggle to bid farewell to the Haitian immigrant killed in Turnpike wrong-way crash

The family of Herby Dufresne, a 30-year-old man who tragically lost his life in a fatal crash on Florida's Turnpike on August 12, is grieving the loss of a promising future. Herby, who immigrated from Haiti in December 2023 under the Biden humanitarian program, died in a collision with a semi-truck making a U-turn on the Turnpike in St. Lucie County. Sandra and Katy, Dufresne's sisters, shared that he had come to the United States with hopes of creating a better life for himself and his loved ones. Described as their source of strength and kindness, Sandra tearfully expressed, "He was our entire strength," while Katy added, "He is someone who loved life and loved his family." In Haiti, Herby leaves behind his parents, three sisters, and two daughters—Louidouine, 9, and Anaika, 14. His sudden passing led to his mother having a stroke upon hearing the devastating news. Despite his efforts to support his family financially, delays in securing visas for his daughters and parents to attend his funeral have added to the family's distress. The family is facing financial strain, with promised donations failing to materialize, leaving them with uncertainties about funeral arrangements. As they navigate these challenges, they may resort to livestreaming the funeral due to visa complications, though concerns about Haiti's infrastructure pose further obstacles.
