Speed of car before Ybor City crash that killed 4: 92 mph, according to records
Moments before a Toyota Camry veered off a sidewalk in Ybor City and crashed into a crowd outside a nightclub, tragically claiming the lives of four individuals, the driver was cited as reaching a speed between 92 and 100 mph while evading Florida Highway Patrol troopers. Recently disclosed court records revealed that the fatal collision occurred less than 10 seconds after troopers ceased their pursuit of the driver, who was reported as driving recklessly. These findings were detailed in a new arrest report filed in court on Wednesday in the case against Silas Kenneth Sampson, who is facing charges of vehicular homicide and other related crimes tied to the incident. Sampson's court appearance is scheduled for Thursday morning, during which prosecutors will request that he remain in custody as the legal process proceeds. The devastating event has provoked community mourning as well as raised inquiries about the necessity of troopers engaging in the chase of Sampson. Initially spotted by a Tampa police helicopter speeding along Interstate 275, the Toyota eluded troopers near Palm and North Nebraska avenues before heading through Tampa Heights and ultimately entering Ybor City, where the crash transpired. The arrest affidavit outlines that the vehicle was traveling between 92 and 100 mph as it approached the intersection of 15th Street, with the driver applying brakes and swerving left to decrease to 82 mph as the car moved onto the north sidewalk. The report identifies the first victims struck by the car as Lisa Sherell Johnson and Marlon Collins, who were sadly killed on impact. Additional victims, Kristina Richards and Sherman Jones, also lost their lives. New charges against Sampson, such as reckless driving with bodily injury, are listed in the arrest affidavit filed on Wednesday, which includes information on those hospitalized and their injuries. Conor Dietrich, 25, remains in a medically induced coma with severe injuries, while Riley Hancock, 24, sustained significant fractures and other injuries. Further investigations are ongoing, and additional charges are anticipated, although Sampson has not yet been formally charged with driving under the influence. A blood sample was taken from Sampson, and the crash inquiry continues to unfold.
