Sinkhole in Bangkok causes road to collapse, leading to traffic disruptions and evacuations
A section of a road in Bangkok collapsed on Wednesday, resulting in a large sinkhole that disrupted traffic, caused damage to infrastructure, and led to evacuations in the vicinity. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but three vehicles were affected by the collapse. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt attributed the collapse to the construction of an underground train station. Videos capturing the incident show the road gradually sinking, bringing down electricity poles and damaging water pipes. As the hole widened and cut off the four-lane road, vehicles hastily tried to move away. The situation halted right in front of a police station, uncovering its structural layout. Although a nearby hospital plans to suspend outpatient services for two days, city officials confirmed that the hospital's building remained intact. Evacuations were ordered for individuals in the police station and the surrounding buildings, with electricity and water connections in the area also being disconnected. Efforts to repair the sinkhole swiftly are underway to prevent further destruction, especially given the heavy rains typical of Bangkok's current monsoon season.
