Three players from a high school girls basketball team in western Iowa were seriously injured in a bus crash on Saturday. The incident occurred while the team was returning from a scrimmage in South Dakota. The Plymouth County Sheriff's Office provided an update on the crash, revealing that three teenage girls sustained major injuries. One of the girls, aged 16, was airlifted from the scene, while a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old were initially taken to a Sioux City hospital and later transferred to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha by helicopter. A 14-year-old from Le Mars was also transported to the hospital by ambulance. Other students involved were treated at the scene and released. Fortunately, the assistant coach and the bus driver were unharmed. The crash, which involved a school bus and a Jeep, occurred on Saturday afternoon at the junction of Highway 75 and County Road C-80 in Plymouth County. The incident is currently being investigated by the PCSO and the Iowa State Patrol. Remsen St. Mary's Schools announced on social media that a fundraising event will be held at a local Subway restaurant in Le Mars to support the injured students. Twenty percent of sales from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday will be donated to aid the students' recovery.
