Semi-truck driver in deadly Turnpike accident quiet during initial court appearance

The semi-truck driver suspected of causing a fatal accident on Florida's Turnpike is currently being held without bond at the St. Lucie County Jail after being transferred from California. Harjinder Singh, 28, had his first court appearance where he did not immediately respond to the judge's inquiries. Interpreters were brought in to assist as Singh remained mostly unresponsive. Eventually, after a public defender suggested appointing legal representation, Singh agreed. He has been assigned a public defender for now, with the option to hire private counsel in the future. Singh faces charges of vehicular manslaughter after allegedly making an illegal U-turn that resulted in a deadly crash, leaving three people deceased. Authorities stated that Singh fled the scene to California, where he was detained and then extradited back to Florida. St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro has confirmed the charges against him. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles previously stated that Singh was driving recklessly during the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided by WPTV.
