SDSU student, 19, paralyzed in Pacific Beach swimming incident
A 19-year-old sophomore at San Diego State University is facing a profound journey to recovery following a swimming accident at Pacific Beach that has left him paralyzed from the chest down. Ethan McCoy, who had been training for an Ironman competition, was swimming with friends near Crystal Pier when the accident occurred on August 30. Ethan's friends quickly acted and got him help after he impacted a sandbar, resulting in three shattered vertebrae in his neck and partial paralysis of his spinal cord. His father, Jim McCoy, describes the past three weeks as a mix of intense emotions for the family. Despite the challenges ahead, Ethan is approaching his rehabilitation with determination, reflecting the same drive he exhibited in high school athletics. Although doctors have shared discouraging news about his ability to walk again, Ethan remains focused on surpassing expectations. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist the family with the increasing medical expenses as Ethan continues his recovery journey at a specialized facility in Chicago.
