School bus accident injures 21 junior high football players near Pittsburgh
On Saturday morning, a school bus carrying members of a junior high school football team from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, was involved in a crash in Beaver County. The team was on their way to a game against Pine-Richland High School when the incident occurred. Economy Borough Police Chief Michael O'Brien reported that the bus had 28 occupants, including 25 children, a driver, and two adults. Sadly, at least 21 children and the driver were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Fortunately, most of the children have been discharged, except for one who was undergoing surgery and listed in critical condition at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Two other patients were taken to Allegheny General Hospital. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but it is believed to have occurred when the bus went off the road and struck a hillside before hitting a utility pole. All junior high football activities for the following week have been canceled, and a parent meeting is scheduled for Monday evening to address concerns. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has offered his full support to the community, and a vigil was set to take place on Saturday evening to show support for those affected. Mental health resources will also be provided to students and staff to assist them during this difficult time.
