Salinas woman faces manslaughter charges for hit-and-run DUI incident
The California Highway Patrol has identified a 19-year-old woman from Salinas as the driver responsible for a tragic hit-and-run incident on Highway 183 last week, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. Kassandra Zavala reportedly rear-ended a red sedan, causing it to collide with an oncoming semi-truck just south of Castroville. The CHP is preparing to present their findings to prosecutors, recommending that Zavala be charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run. While Zavala sustained minor to moderate injuries and received medical treatment, she is not in custody and is expected to appear in court if the charges are pursued. The victims of the accident were Marcos Alia, 35, of Salinas, and Aristeo Jimenez, 31, of Port Hueneme. The driver of the sedan, a 20-year-old individual, remains in critical condition in the hospital as of Monday.
