Safety improvements sought by Little Chute residents following fatal crosswalk accident
A month after the tragic accident that took the life of 82-year-old Ted Heidke at a crosswalk in Little Chute, his family and neighbors are uniting to promote safety enhancements at the intersection. The incident occurred at the junction of East Main Street and Buchanan Street when Heidke was walking through the crosswalk and was hit by a vehicle. Rachel and Travis Sutton, residents near the intersection, were the first to provide aid to Heidke after the accident. They express concerns about speeding vehicles and the general lack of safety at the location. The Suttons are collaborating with Ted's relatives to advocate for safety enhancements such as flashing lights and improved traffic control measures at the crossroads. Lt. Mark Wery from the Fox Valley Metro Police Department notes that making changes at the intersection, which lies on a state highway, involves coordinating efforts with the State of Wisconsin. While past crash data indicates only one fatality out of 10 accidents over the last 25 years, the community's worries are being taken seriously. Sandra Frassetto, Ted's sister, has refrained from using that area due to safety risks and is urging for crucial changes to avoid future tragedies. The Village of Little Chute is working on broader safety improvements throughout the town, including addressing concerns at this intersection.
