SAD urges US government to consider Indian truck driver's case compassionately
Chandigarh - The Shiromani Akali Dal recently passed a resolution requesting the United States government to consider the case of Harjinder Singh, a truck driver facing vehicular homicide charges, from a humanitarian perspective. The party also urged the Indian government to offer consular and legal assistance to the Sikh driver and ensure he has access to proper legal recourse. During a meeting chaired by party president Sukhbir Singh Badal, senior Shiromani Akali Dal leaders from six Punjab districts supported this resolution. Harjinder, a 28-year-old truck driver of Indian origin from Punjab, is accused of causing a fatal accident in Florida. Following his arrest after fleeing to California, SAD president Badal emphasized Harjinder's strong work ethic as part of the Punjabi and Sikh diaspora and emphasized his right to a fair trial. Expressing sorrow for the families affected by the tragedy, the resolution urged the US government to consider Harjinder's background and the Punjabi community's contributions. Additionally, it called upon the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure Harjinder receives proper legal aid through Indian diplomatic channels and for the Punjab government to support his family. The resolution also encouraged North American Sikh and Punjabi diaspora groups to assist Harjinder morally, financially, and legally during this challenging time. Lastly, the Shiromani Akali Dal recognized the significant role of Punjabi and Sikh truck drivers in the economies of both India and the US, pledging to support the global Punjabi community in securing justice, respect, and humanitarian assistance for all.
