Request for Solutions for Dangerous State Road 710
Two fatal accidents occurred on State Road 710 on Tuesday, one in Martin County and another in Palm Beach County. WPTV is addressing safety concerns by discussing the incidents with local law enforcement and the Florida Department of Transportation. Residents along SR-710 have expressed worries about the road's safety and have witnessed numerous accidents over the years. Issues typically arise from drivers attempting risky maneuvers to pass slower vehicles on the two-lane stretch of the road. Suggestions to enhance safety include widening SR-710 to four lanes, like in Palm Beach County, to allow for safer passing opportunities. Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek acknowledges the dangers of SR-710 and is actively monitoring the situation with his traffic unit. The Florida Department of Transportation has implemented some safety enhancements along SR-710, including intersection improvements. Plans are underway to widen SR-710 to four lanes, though construction is not expected to begin until at least fiscal year 2027. Despite these efforts, residents are concerned that more accidents may occur before these improvements are made.
