Report: Three Haitian immigrants killed in Florida Turnpike accident while returning to Haiti

Three individuals, identified as Herby Dufresne, Faniola Joseph, and Rodrigue Dor, lost their lives in a tragic accident on the Florida Turnpike involving an unauthorized U-turn made by a truck driver. The victims, who were Haitian immigrants with ties to South Florida, were on their way back to Indiana. Dufresne, who had legal status under Haiti's Temporary Protected Status, had initially settled in South Florida before moving to Indiana due to job opportunities. Joseph had previously resided in Pompano Beach, while Dor lived in Miami. The truck driver, Harjinder Singh, an undocumented immigrant who entered California in 2018 and obtained a commercial driver's license, attempted a U-turn in a restricted area, causing the fatal collision. Following this incident, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has used it to emphasize his immigration stance, raising concerns about California's licensing policies for drivers. DeSantis has insisted on stricter measures at truck inspection sites and emphasized that licenses issued to undocumented immigrants will not be recognized in the state.
