Report reveals cable failure in fatal Lisbon funicular accident.
A recent investigation report on the tragic Lisbon Gloria funicular crash has revealed that the cable connecting the two carriages broke, causing the devastating accident. The report explains that the carriages had only traveled a short distance when they lost the balancing force of the cable, leading to the rapid acceleration and subsequent crash. Despite the activation of the vehicle's brakes, they were unable to reduce the speed, resulting in the collision at approximately 60kmh (37mph) within a span of less than 50 seconds. Concerns have been raised about the maintenance of the equipment, although the report states that it was up to date based on current evidence. An inspection had been conducted the morning of the incident, but the area where the cable snapped was not visible without dismantling. The Gloria funicular, a historical landmark from 1914 in Lisbon, is a popular attraction for tourists traveling between Restauradores Square and the Bairro Alto neighborhood. The incident unfolded with Cabin No.2 stopping abruptly and partially coming off the tracks, followed by Cabin No.1 accelerating and colliding with various structures. The investigation revealed that the cable failure occurred at the top, where it was attached to the upper trolley of Cabin No.1. Tragically, British citizens were among the victims of the crash, including those who lost their lives alongside other passengers.
