Pope offers prayers and condolences for victims of Lisbon tragedy

A telegram from Pope Leo XIV was sent to the Patriarch of Lisbon, Cardinal Rui Manuel Sousa Valério, expressing condolences to the families affected by a tragic funicular railway crash. The Pope’s message, delivered by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, offered prayers for the recovery of the injured and invoked Christian hope for all those impacted by the disaster. The Pope also recognized and thanked the rescue teams involved, extending his Apostolic Blessing to everyone, particularly to the families of the deceased. Portuguese authorities reported the loss of 17 lives and injuries to 21 people in what they are terming one of Lisbon’s most devastating tragedies in recent times. An investigation is ongoing with minimal details currently available. Witnesses described the streetcar losing control while descending a hill during rush hour, leading to the accident. The company that operates the historical “Elevador da Gloria” confirmed that maintenance had been conducted as scheduled. The victims and injured individuals include both Portuguese nationals and visitors from various countries.
