A police officer from Southern California tragically lost her life after being struck by a driver suspected of driving under the influence. The late officer, Lauren Craven, 25, served with the La Mesa Police Department located near San Diego. The incident occurred during a response to a multi-vehicle crash on the 8 Freeway. The driver, Antonio Alcantar, 38, was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Thousands attended a funeral procession in honor of Officer Craven, highlighting her dedication to service and the safety of others. Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his condolences, emphasizing the impact of her passing on the San Diego community. Craven's father reflected on her fulfilling her dream of becoming a police officer, while the La Mesa Police Department mourned the loss of an officer known for her courage and compassion. An individual named David Pearce, a Hollywood producer, was sentenced to prison for multiple crimes, including the murder of two women and the assault of several others. The assaults occurred between 2005 and 2021, with Pearce's victims recounting how he would deceive them into visiting his apartment before drugging and assaulting them. Officer Craven was among those assaulted by Pearce in 2020, during her time as a student at Loyola Marymount. She later pursued her ambition of serving in law enforcement and joined the La Mesa Police Department in 2024. Pearce received a sentence of 146 years for his crimes by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. The tragic incident on the freeway marked the end of Officer Craven's promising career and life dedicated to serving the community.
