Monks killed in cable car accident en route to mountain meditation in Sri Lanka
A tragic incident in Sri Lanka resulted in the loss of a Buddhist monk who passed away due to injuries sustained in a cable car crash, bringing the death toll to eight, according to authorities. The accident, which is the most severe of its kind, occurred near a forest monastery in the northwestern Kurunegala district. Seven monks, including three foreigners, lost their lives when the cable car cabin plummeted down the mountainside. In addition, six other individuals were hospitalized, with four in critical condition. A police official confirmed the sad news of the monk's passing and detailed that funerals had taken place for five of the deceased monks. The incident, which occurred as the monks were en route to meditation units at the Na Uyana monastery, is believed to have been caused by a snapped cable, resulting in the cabin veering off track before colliding with a tree. Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister shared condolences for the revered monks, expressing sorrow over the tragedy and extending sympathies to those affected. The accident has deeply affected the Buddhist community, and prayers are being offered for the recovery of the injured individuals. The Na Uyana monastery is situated approximately 80 miles northeast of the capital, Colombo, covering a vast area of forest and serving as a home to around 150 Buddhist monks.
