Meridian Street Residents Call for Increased Action on Rising Accident Rates

Recent crashes at the intersection of 43rd and Meridian streets have raised concerns among residents in the area. Residents like Kim Kourany and Bruce Heslin are worried about the safety of the intersection for drivers and pedestrians, especially children. Bruce Heslin mentioned that the intersection has been a problematic spot for years, with frequent accidents occurring, some of which have been catastrophic. After a recent crash that injured one person, the Department of Public Works installed neon yellow pylons in the middle of Meridian Street to prevent left turns and reduce collision opportunities. However, some residents are unsure if this measure will effectively address the issue in the long term. Some suggest implementing a more permanent solution, such as adding lights or reducing the street to one lane to slow down traffic. While DPW has not shared any additional plans for improvements, neighbors believe that addressing the safety concerns at this intersection should be a higher priority on the city's list. City-County Councilmember John Barth was unavailable for comment but indicated that the community's safety is a priority.
