Man from Orem apprehended after deadly accident in Provo Canyon
An Orem man has been arrested by Provo police after a car he was driving was found crashed in Provo Canyon with a woman who had died inside. Zachary Alan Ingalls, aged 31, was taken into custody at the Utah County Jail on Thursday on suspicion of automobile homicide. The incident occurred on Aug. 1 when officers responded to a crash report in Provo Canyon. Ingalls, who had sought treatment at a local hospital, claimed that his car had rolled off Kyhv Peak Road with another individual still in the vehicle. Upon locating the vehicle, authorities found Kortnie Benson Barajas deceased inside. Following a urine and blood test conducted on Ingalls, it was revealed that he tested positive for THC, opiates, metabolized alcohol, morphine, and THC metabolites. This isn't the first time Ingalls has been involved in a serious crash while driving under the influence of THC. In an incident in 2022, he was speeding in a 25-mph zone, tried to overtake another vehicle, leading to a collision that caused life-threatening injuries. In consequence, he previously received a conviction for negligently driving a vehicle, resulting in severe injury. Ingalls faces a recent charge for DUI filed in March as a third-degree felony, with his next court appearance scheduled for October 8.
