Man charged with new DWI after fatal Sunland Park crash; prosecutors push for detention

A man accused of causing a fatal hit-and-run crash in Sunland Park is facing new legal troubles after being arrested for driving while intoxicated. Vicente Vasquez Jr., 61, appeared in court in Doña Ana County where prosecutors requested his bond be revoked. Vasquez was arrested for aggravated DWI while driving with a suspended license. He had been out on bond from a previous deadly crash in July that resulted in the death of a woman and injuries to a man. The District Attorney's Office was not initially aware of Vasquez's past DWI convictions, but is now seeking to keep him detained and pursue felony charges for the new DWI offense. Family members of the victim expressed frustration over the previous bond release, questioning the value placed on their loved one's life. Vasquez has a history of DWI convictions in both Texas and New Mexico.
