Judge steps down, trial postponed for suspect in fatal accident
The trial set to begin this week for a woman accused of shoplifting at Lakeside Mall last December, leading to a fatal crash, has been postponed after the judge stepped down last Friday. Joneaka Smooth, 31, is facing charges for allegedly stealing from Saks Fifth Avenue and Lakeside mall before being involved in the deadly crash that resulted in the deaths of two teenagers. Jefferson Parish deputies pursued her vehicle, but the chase was quickly ended near the parish line. Smooth's high-speed driving led to the fatal crash, killing Giselle Smith, 17, and Semaj Morris, 17, with Giselle's sister Paris sustaining injuries. A new trial date has not yet been determined.
