Human mistake blamed for fatal California helicopter crash
Investigators from the federal government have concluded that pilot error led to the tragic mid-air collision of two helicopters in Riverside County in 2023, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. The incident occurred on August 6, 2023, during firefighting efforts near Cabazon. The collision involved a Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane helitanker and a Bell 407 helicopter, causing the Bell 407 to crash after being struck by the Skycrane. Unfortunately, all three individuals on board the Bell 407 lost their lives in the accident. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that the Skycrane crew violated airspace regulations by flying at a higher altitude than permitted and descending aggressively, leading to the collision. The NTSB also concluded that the use of an antihistamine by the Bell 407's pilot did not contribute to the accident. In response to the tragedy, Cal Fire has enacted new safety measures, including enhanced pilot training and communication protocols, to prevent future incidents. Wrongful death lawsuits have been filed on behalf of the victims, highlighting the devastating impact of the collision and seeking accountability for the avoidable loss.
