Helicopter crash on Highway 50 in Sacramento leaves 3 critical
First responders were amazed that anyone survived after a medical helicopter collided with Highway 50 in Sacramento, leaving three passengers in critical condition. The impact was so severe that one passenger was thrown 10 feet from the helicopter, while another was trapped beneath the wreckage. Sacramento Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Justin Sylvia expressed astonishment at the fact that individuals were conscious and alert following the incident. The crash involving a red REACH air ambulance helicopter occurred on Monday evening, with two female staff members and one male staff member being rushed to a hospital in critical condition. The first fire captain on the scene, along with around 15 bystanders, worked together to lift part of the helicopter off one trapped victim, while another victim was rescued from a ejected helicopter chair. The crash occurred as the helicopter appeared to hit a dirt embankment on the side of the highway, causing significant damage before skidding across multiple lanes. The REACH air ambulances are typically used to transport patients to hospitals, especially those in rural or remote areas. Fortunately, there were no patients aboard at the time of the accident. The details surrounding the cause of the crash remain unknown, with the company expressing concern and support for those affected. The eastbound lanes of Highway 50 were expected to remain closed for the night as authorities continue their investigation to prevent any potential fuel ignition from the helicopter wreckage.
