Florida Turnpike crash prompts bill targeting immigrant truckers
A Senate Republican is proposing new legislation to strengthen federal regulations on commercial driver's licenses following a tragic accident in Florida that resulted in the loss of three lives. Sen. Ashley Moody from Florida plans to introduce a bill that aims to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining commercial driver's licenses and enhance the English language proficiency criteria for obtaining such licenses. The proposed legislation, known as the Safer Truckers Act of 2025, follows a recent incident in Florida where an illegal immigrant from India, Harjinder Singh, caused a fatal accident while making an illegal U-turn. Singh, who held a CDL from California, was charged with multiple counts of vehicular homicide and manslaughter. The bill, if enacted, would mandate that commercial driver's licenses be issued only to U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, or individuals with valid work visas. It would also require states to report on their enforcement of English proficiency standards, in accordance with an executive order issued by President Donald Trump. Failure by states to uphold these standards could jeopardize their eligibility for federal funding. Senator Moody emphasized the importance of ensuring road safety and indicated that states must comply with these regulations to maintain federal funding. Visit FOXNews.com for more news updates.
