Florida truck collision involving Indian driver triggers dispute between Trump administration and California governor - Hindustan Times
A recent tragic accident in Florida resulted in the loss of three lives and has prompted further criticism from the Trump administration directed towards California Governor Gavin Newsom. The incident occurred when a semi-truck driver, believed to be an undocumented immigrant, attempted an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike. This dangerous maneuver led to the trailer jackknifing and colliding with a minivan. The truck driver, Harjinder Singh, an Indian citizen, had received a commercial driver's license from the California Department of Motor Vehicles despite being allegedly undocumented. The Department of Homeland Security strongly condemned criminal illegal immigrants, expressing their commitment to public safety and offering condolences to the victims and their families. They voiced concern over the California DMV granting a license to an individual in the country unlawfully and emphasized their efforts in ensuring public safety and removing criminal immigrants from the nation. However, Governor Newsom's office pointed out that Singh had entered the US during the Trump administration. Singh reportedly entered California illegally in 2018 and was detained by Border Patrol. After claiming fear of returning to India, he was released on an immigration bond and has since been involved in ongoing immigration proceedings. In response, the White House criticized California for granting a driver's license to Singh and accused Governor Newsom of maintaining policies that endanger American lives. The Florida Highway Patrol detailed how the semi-truck attempted an unsafe U-turn on the turnpike, further highlighting the seriousness of the accident.
