Final monkey caught after Mississippi highway accident.

Authorities in Heidelberg, Mississippi announced on Thursday that the final stray monkey from a group that escaped following a highway accident has been found and safely taken into custody. A local resident near the crash site notified authorities of the monkey's whereabouts, leading to its successful capture, as stated by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. The incident dates back to an October 28 incident when a truck overturned on Interstate 59, prompting a frantic search for the missing monkeys. Sadly, five monkeys perished during the search efforts. Video footage from officers' body cameras captured the chaotic scene as the monkeys roamed the interstate median after breaking free from their crates, causing concern for motorists. Two of the escaped monkeys were later shot by civilians who claimed they were protecting their community from potential harm, emphasizing the need for caution around aggressive Rhesus monkeys. The last monkey was discovered near a residence in the Vossburg area, with locals alerting authorities for assistance. Workers from a company involved in transporting the monkeys swiftly arrived to tranquilize and retrieve the animal. The monkeys, originally from Tulane University National Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana, were en route to a research facility according to PreLabs, a biomedical support organization. Despite the escape, no known diseases were carried by the animals. Thirteen of the surviving monkeys have since been safely transported to their intended location, shedding light on the often secretive world of animal research.
