Fiery Kentucky plane crash kills at least 9, causes extensive damage

First responders were searching for additional victims after a UPS cargo plane crashed and exploded in a massive fireball at the company’s global aviation hub in Kentucky. The crash resulted in the tragic loss of at least 11 lives, including one child, according to authorities. The incident occurred as the plane was departing for Honolulu from UPS Worldport at Louisville's Muhammad Ali International Airport. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with Todd Inman noting that a fire broke out in the left wing after the plane was cleared for takeoff. Despite gaining enough altitude to clear the runway fence, the plane ultimately crashed just outside the airport. The death toll had reached at least 11 by Wednesday afternoon, with 15 people sustaining injuries. The area was placed under a shelter-in-place order and people were advised not to drink tap water as officials monitored air quality. Expressing concern for those affected, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency and highlighted the community support aiding in search and rescue efforts. Despite the violent nature of the crash, there was relief that certain key facilities were spared. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, which has caused significant disruptions to UPS operations in Louisville.
