Fatal Louisville UPS plane crash claims Albuquerque pilot
UPS officials have confirmed that one of the casualties from the cargo plane crash in Albuquerque was a pilot. The crew on board UPS Flight 2976 included Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and Relief Officer Dana Diamond. Truitt was based in Albuquerque according to his FAA records. The flight, headed to Honolulu, HI, crashed shortly after taking off from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. The plane caught fire as it tried to lift off from the runway and subsequently crashed on the airport's outskirts. The plane's left engine detached before the crash. The investigators found and are analyzing the cockpit voice and flight data recorders. Despite the efforts of over 100 first responders, it took more than six hours to bring the fires under control, owing to the aircraft being fully fueled with 38,000 gallons of fuel for the long flight. UPS has conveyed that the National Transportation Safety Board is handling the investigation.
