Fatal head-on collision near Great Bend

The Barton County Sheriff's Office reported that a tragic accident occurred on Wednesday evening near Great Bend, where it is believed that a medical issue led to the crash. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Kansas Highway 96, approximately 3 miles northwest of Great Bend. The Sheriff's Office stated that Mark DeWald, a 72-year-old resident of Great Bend, was involved in the accident while driving his Ford Fusion eastbound. He veered into the opposite lane and collided with a Dodge Ram being driven by a 17-year-old from Timken. DeWald sadly passed away at the scene, while the teenager sustained minor injuries and was taken to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend for treatment. The Sheriff's Office suspects that DeWald may have experienced a medical emergency that led to the crash, and further investigation is ongoing.
