Fatal crash on Maine Turnpike in New Gloucester leaves two adults dead and four children injured, according to police.
A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday morning on the Maine Turnpike resulting in the loss of two adults and injuries to four children. The Maine State Police reported that the crash took place on Interstate 95 south close to Mile Marker 71 in New Gloucester at around 4:25 a.m. The crash involved a 2017 GMC Acadia towing a U-Haul trailer that had partially stopped on the highway shoulder. Six individuals from Lewiston, including a man, a woman, and four children aged 7 to 14, were in the GMC. The man, woman, and two children had exited the vehicle to attend to the trailer when a 2015 Audi SUV collided with them from behind. Tragically, the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the man succumbed to critical injuries after being taken to a medical center. The children sustained minor injuries and were taken to the same medical facility for treatment. Investigations are ongoing with authorities working on confirming family relationships and identities of those involved. The Audi driver, a man from Wales, was treated for minor injuries and released. Currently, no charges have been filed against the Audi driver. The incident led to the closure of I-95 south near the crash site for over three hours.
