Fatal boating accident claims lives of two women from Long Island
Two Long Island women tragically lost their lives in a boating accident in Maine over the weekend, with the victims identified as Farhana Nasir, 53, from Selden, and Kiran Akbar, 23, from Lake Grove. The incident occurred at Flagstaff Lake in Eustis, Maine around 1:30 p.m. when an 18-foot pontoon boat carrying seven individuals flipped near the beach area of a campground. Despite efforts to prevent the boat from capsizing, all seven passengers were thrown into the water. Onlookers nearby and on the lake came to their rescue, pulling them to safety. Sadly, Nasir and Akbar were unresponsive and could not be revived, while a third passenger was flown to a medical center and remains in critical condition. None of the passengers were wearing life jackets during the accident, and though the incident is being investigated, alcohol is not believed to have played a role.
