Driver in fatal Gordon County crash arrested again

Matthew Allen Pickens, a 44-year-old man from Calhoun, has been identified and charged as the driver involved in a fatal head-on crash that occurred last month in Gordon County. He was taken to the Gordon County Jail after being released from the Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Pickens is facing charges that include homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, fleeing from officers, and other traffic-related offenses. According to the Georgia State Patrol, Pickens evaded law enforcement on August 23 and collided head-on with a Dade County family on Rome Road, resulting in one fatality and several severe injuries. Pickens' identity was kept confidential while he received treatment in intensive care but was revealed once he waived extradition from Tennessee and was returned to Gordon County custody. Jail records indicate that Pickens has been arrested in Gordon County on three prior occasions for traffic-related violations, in 2020, 2022, and 2023.
