Driver charged with DUI following Fort Myers car accident
A man was taken into custody following allegations of causing a collision while driving under the influence in Fort Myers. The Lee County Sheriff's Office reported that deputies were called to a serious car accident at the junction of South Tamiami Trail and Michael G. Rippe Parkway on September 7 involving a 2009 Mercedes-Benz C300 and a 2021 Honda Ridgeline pickup truck. Subsequently, four individuals, including two children, were taken to the hospital as trauma patients. Witnesses gave statements that indicated the Mercedes-Benz had sped through a red light and collided with the Honda. During the investigation, an open can of Modelo beer was discovered in the Mercedes-Benz. Following medical tests, it was determined that the driver, identified as Ismael Cruz, 31, had a blood alcohol concentration well above the legal limit. Cruz was found to be driving without a license and was not the registered owner of the vehicle. After gathering additional evidence through a search warrant on September 11, Cruz was arrested and now faces a range of charges including driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury and property damage.
