Closure of I-95 south in Nash County due to crash involving semi-truck and tractor-trailer

A part of Interstate 95 in Nash County was shut down on Monday evening after a collision between two tractor-trailers led to a fuel spill, reported North State Highway Patrol. The incident occurred just before 6:50 p.m. on I-95 South near North Halifax Road and mile marker 143 in Red Oak. Images from the scene indicated one of the tractor-trailers was involved. The road closure extended past Exit 145 to North Halifax Road, as confirmed by NCDOT. Photos revealed a tractor-trailer in a jackknifed position after colliding with another tractor-trailer. The leading truck's cab faced significant damage following the accident. According to highway patrol, a black Peterbilt tractor-trailer had stopped on the right side due to mechanical issues. The driver had exited the vehicle, which was transporting a large excavator on a flatbed, to attend to the engine when the crash happened. The sidelined Peterbilt was hit by a white Kenworth tractor-trailer that veered off the road, striking the rear of the flatbed. This collision left the Kenworth jackknifed partially blocking the shoulder and lane on I-95. The spill of fuel and engine fluids mandated cleanup by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Marvin Gay Young, 61, the Kenworth driver from Smithfield, was charged with failure to stay in lane and received treatment for minor injuries at a nearby hospital. The driver of the immobilized tractor-trailer was unscathed and faced no charges. NCDOT crews remained on-site clearing the spilled fluids until 11 p.m. Originally, the highway was expected to reopen by 10 p.m., but later projections pushed the reopening to around 1 a.m. the following morning.
