
Child trapped under vehicle following collision at Encinitas gelato store
In Encinitas, California, a man has been charged with DUI following a serious accident that occurred on Wednesday evening. The crash resulted in a child being hospitalized and caused significant damage to a gelato shop in the area. The collision, which took place close to 6 p.m. near the intersection of South Coast Highway 101 and West D Street, involved a 64-year-old man named Edward De La Torre driving a 2026 Chevy Silverado northbound on South Coast Highway 101. De La Torre rear-ended a 2022 Toyota Prius, causing his vehicle to veer off the road and crash into Gelato 101, a local dessert shop. A male juvenile inside the shop was struck by the truck and trapped under it, but first responders were able to rescue the child, who was conscious and breathing. The juvenile was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital for evaluation, with no current update on their condition. De La Torre sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated in a local hospital. The occupants of the Prius were assessed by paramedics and found to be unharmed. De La Torre was arrested for suspected DUI and an ongoing investigation is in place.
