Charges brought against motorcyclist in accident resulting in death of Des Moines teenager
An Albia man, Kaelin Meinders, has been charged in connection with a tragic crash that resulted in the death of a Des Moines teenager last weekend. The Polk County Sheriff's Office announced on Wednesday that Meinders faces charges including driving while barred-habitual offender, causing an accident without insurance, and reckless driving. The charges are linked to an incident on September 20th at 4950 NE 29th Street in Des Moines, where Meinders' motorcycle struck 15-year-old Santiago Rhone as he crossed the street. Despite lifesaving efforts by deputies and medics, Santiago tragically passed away at a Des Moines hospital. Meinders, who also sustained injuries in the crash, remains hospitalized; his condition is currently unknown. Authorities obtained a search warrant to collect a blood sample from Meinders due to suspicions of impairment. Further charges may be brought as the investigation unfolds. A Candlelight Vigil in memory of Santiago Rhone is scheduled for Wednesday evening at East High School's baseball field, where the sophomore and member of the baseball team was known and cherished.
