Charged with manslaughter: Tesla driver in fatal California accident
A 67-year-old man from Hawaii who was involved in a chaotic and deadly crash in San Francisco earlier this year while driving a Tesla that he claimed accelerated on its own is now facing a variety of serious charges, as reported by multiple media outlets. The incident, which occurred on Jan. 19, involved Jia Lin Zheng speeding off the Interstate 280 off-ramp to 6th Street in a Tesla Model Y, hitting three cars and running red lights at nearly 90 miles per hour as he headed downtown, as per the San Francisco Chronicle. Witnesses described the Tesla as a "black blur" and Zheng as a "madman." The collision at 6th and Harrison streets involved the man crashing into a Lexus at a stoplight, causing further chaos resulting in casualties and injuries. Zheng, who asserted that the Tesla malfunctioned and accelerated on its own, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and is now facing felony charges of vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving, and multiple hit-and-run charges. He was recently booked into San Francisco County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court.
