Accident on I-69 in Johnson County causes road closure
A major accident caused the closure of part of I-69 south in Johnson County on Monday morning, with an expected duration of several hours, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. The closure at mile marker 154 was due to a crash causing injuries, reported by the Indiana Department of Transportation. All southbound lanes on I-69 were shut down, with traffic being diverted to the right shoulder, resulting in slow-moving northbound lanes as well. The incident occurred near Smith Valley Road on I-69 south, with images from the sheriff's office revealing debris and two badly damaged vehicles. After receiving reports of a disabled vehicle on I-69 south, law enforcement officials were en route to the scene when a southbound vehicle collided with the stranded one, causing the stranded vehicle to shift to the left side of the road. The driver of the stranded vehicle was hospitalized in serious condition, while the other driver did not require hospitalization. Sheriff Duane Burgess informed that I-69 south would remain closed for an unspecified period for investigation purposes. Motorists are advised to steer clear of the affected area and seek alternative routes, such as the access road off of Smith Valley to reach State Road 144 and re-enter I-69 south.
