9-year-old girl injured as car crashes into bedroom in Center Line

A 9-year-old girl is currently in the hospital following a frightening incident where a speeding SUV crashed into her bedroom wall while she was sleeping in Center Line. The crash occurred shortly before 3 a.m. on MacArthur Boulevard, causing the vehicle to enter Laila Breitshtrus's bedroom, narrowly missing her younger sibling's room. Upon hearing the loud impact, Laila's mother, Rachael Wright, and her fiancé rushed to check on the children. The force of the crash threw Laila out of bed, through a window, and into the yard. After finding Laila amidst debris, her family called for emergency assistance. Laila sustained multiple injuries, including a liver laceration, spinal fractures, a fractured nose, and various cuts and bruises. Despite the shocking event, neighbors who heard the crash described it as sounding like an explosion, with one even considering Laila's survival as miraculous. The 20-year-old driver of the SUV fled the scene on foot but was apprehended nearby and is facing several charges as investigations continue. Police are awaiting toxicology results to determine if the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash. Laila's family remains by her side at the hospital, expressing hope for her recovery. Additionally, a GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the family with recovery expenses.
